Streetwear Advice to keep Flexxing

The most common misconception about Men’s fashion, especially when it comes to streetwear, is that it simply means wearing casual jeans, baggy shirts, hoodies and trainers. But in reality, streetwear fashion is more complex than that. It is all about making a fashion statement, and showcasing your taste. Streetwear fashion is so popular among men that special labels and brands have created their own outfit lines exclusively for streetwear. For example, consider Virgil Abloh’s Off-White and Riccardo Tisci’s Output. Even luxury players like Nike have come into the picture, and taken the iconic sneaker designs, and taken them to great heights. The streetwear fashion has taken the men’s clothing industry by storm, but even if you buy from the biggest retailer, you need to add your flair to create a true style statement.

Where the F#@K did it come from?

The culture of streetwear fashion was born in the California state and influenced by the surfing tradition. It did not take to common liking instantly, but thanks to the creativity of Tony Hawk and the trending hip hop culture, the reign of baggy jeans and graphic tees dominated the men’s fashion industry as we know it today. Streetwear has become so popular than even brands like Louis Vuitton have collaborated with other designers to introduce their streetwear clothing for men.

What’s relevant now?

The reason why streetwear has grown so much in popularity is because it is both fashionable as well as comfortable. It is not just a teenager’s outfit anymore, it is equally worn and appreciated by grown up men. From bomber jackets to denim jeans, from printed tees to colorful shades, the fashion industry has taken a huge turn and influenced the way people dress up today. Streetwear gives a sense of freedom that was not present in traditional suits. The typical dressing of the yesteryears was boring and not flattering at all. The streetwear fashion was much needed and awaited with its explosion of colors and its unlimited styles which create endless possibilities in personal style and taste.

If you want to be streetwise in fashion, there are some common things that you need to consider. If you are still living in the 90s, you might be wearing the Ralph Lauren’s interpretation of streetwear which was loosely fit chinos, baggy shirts and beanies. But if you want something more contemporary and popular in today’s day and age, then look for something that has longline cuts and dropped crotches.

Any kind of streetwear is fine as long as you feel comfortable in it. But consistency is the key. Once you have made your choice, stick to it and do not try to mix it too much. Mixing styles can be a good thing but if you over do it, like matching those Wallabees with your double-layered street Goth shorts, because you might end up in a fashion disaster. To maintain a smart look, keep only one piece of clothing oversized, and keep the rest in close-fitting. For example, you can pair an oversized hooded top with a skinny or slim fit pair of chinos. If you want to dress streetwear smart for work, you can choose a close-fitting suit with a loose or oversized shirt. But lose the tie because you want to create a casual slouchy look, and not a stiff dull image.

Some Tips…

When it comes to streetwear, a good pair of dark blue denim jeans never goes out of style. In the streetwear landscape, denim jeans have become the emblem of quality, and everything you wear on top just adds to your entire look. The older it is, the better it looks. The legend goes that the gradual fading of denim is something of a personal self-discovery journey that every man should take. Although giving it a wash every now and then won’t completely lead you astray.

Of course, you don’t have to sweat in your pair of denim jeans every day, although some men just love doing that. Instead, you can take a break and relax in the soft cotton fleece, and chill in your sweatpants. Once considered antithesis, they have now become a symbol of fashion in some circles, and designers like Thom Browne and Alexander Wang have given a nod in approval. They have produced luxury versions of leisure and gym wear sweatpants that have become all the rave in men’s fashionwear. Heather grey or black are always popular choices in sweatpants, and you cannot go wrong with them.

The urban culture of the 1980s and 1990s has dominated the prevalent streetwear scene. From certified classics to niche designs, printed tees are the cornerstone of suburban men’s fashion. They make a bold statement and no attire is complete without them. There are countless brands out there that compete in printed tees like Stussy, Obey and Burma MFG. The next time you go shopping, don’t come home without one. The older they are, the more valuable they become. So, stay in style and be streetwear woke!

The very first you should know is that streetwear doesn't conform to the regular fashion status quo. So yes, the style gives you the freedom or better still, the opportunity to make a statement wherever you go. And of course, at this point, we're talking about enjoying the unrestricted feeling of donning a shirt, jacket or sweater that's designed to look pretty chunky and somewhat shapeless
